Tessa Folks Named New Century Transfer Scholar
Tessa Folks, a student at Southeast New Mexico College, has been named New Mexico's 2024 New Century Transfer Scholar and will receive a $2,250 scholarship. Tessa is the first Southeast New Mexico College student to receive the scholarship and represented New Mexico at the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Convention in Louisville, KY on April 8, 2024. To become a New Century Transfer Scholar is a competitive process. According to Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), New Century Transfer Scholars are selected based on their academic accomplishments, leadership, activities, and how they extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom. Over 2,200 students from more than 1,300 college campuses nationwide were nominated. Only one New Century Transfer Scholar is selected from each state. The program is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Foundation, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa, and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).

SENMC Inducts 26 New Members to the Alpha Rho Xi Chapter of PTK
On April 27, 2024, the Alpha Rho Xi chapter at SENMC inducted 26 new members into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. Each of these students completed at least 12 cumulative credit hours with a 3.5 or higher. The advisors, Dr. Raven Anderson and Dr. David McIntosh, congratulate each of them for this academic achievement.

Financial Wellness Workshop: Como Administrar Tus Finanzas Personales - sesion en espanol
La sesion del Taller de Bienestar Financiero de esta manana, en colaboracion con Financial Security Credit Union, fue un evento esclarecedor que proporciono herramientas practicas y consejos utiles para manejar de manera efectiva las finanzas personales. Conducida en espanol, la sesion se enfoco en llegar a una audiencia diversa y brindar apoyo a aquellos que buscan mejorar su salud financiera. Los participantes fueron guiados a traves de una serie de temas fundamentales, desde la creacion de un presupuesto hasta la planificacion para el futuro financiero. Los facilitadores compartieron estrategias para controlar gastos, manejar deudas y establecer metas financieras realistas, todo ello adaptado a la realidad economica de los asistentes. El taller no solo se centro en aspectos practicos, sino que tambien abordo la importancia del bienestar emocional en la gestion de las finanzas personales. Se discutieron tecnicas para manejar el estres financiero y cultivar una mentalidad positiva hacia el dinero, promoviendo asi una relacion saludable con las finanzas. Ademas, en colaboracion con Financial Security Credit Union, se proporcionaron detalles sobre los productos y servicios financieros disponibles para ayudar a los participantes a alcanzar sus objetivos financieros. Al finalizar la sesion, los participantes se fueron con un mayor sentido de empoderamiento y confianza en su capacidad para tomar decisiones financieras informadas. El Taller de Bienestar Financiero, en colaboracion con Financial Security Credit Union, no solo proporciono conocimientos practicos, sino que tambien sirvio como un espacio seguro y de apoyo para abordar temas relacionados con el dinero en un entorno inclusivo y accesible para todos.

Peer Mentoring Program Presentation - April 12
Last Friday's Peer Mentoring Program presentation at the Persistence and Completion Day was a dynamic and insightful session that showcased the invaluable contributions of Peer Mentors Brittney, Delia, and Sarah, alongside Student Worker Joel. Their collective experiences and dedication to student success provided a wealth of knowledge and inspiration for attendees. Brittney, Delia, and Sarah, as seasoned Peer Mentors, brought forth their firsthand experiences in supporting fellow students through various academic and personal challenges. Their anecdotes painted a vivid picture of the impact that peer support can have on student persistence and achievement. From navigating course selections to providing emotional support during stressful times, their commitment to fostering a supportive community was palpable. Together, the presenters emphasized the multifaceted nature of student support and the interconnectedness of various campus resources in promoting persistence and completion. Through their collaborative efforts, they demonstrated how peer mentorship and student employment programs can synergize to create a nurturing environment conducive to academic and personal growth. SENMC Thanks First Cohort of Students to Participate in the Territorium E-Proficiency Profile Test
Southeast New Mexico College thanks the group of students that participated in the Territorium E-Proficiency Profile Test. This is our first cohort of students to participate in this valuable testing. Information gathered from this test will be used by faculty to improve their teaching. We thank these students for helping SENMC improve for our current students and all students that will come to SENMC in the future.

Optimize Your Time Workshop - February 28
Today's "Optimize Your Time" workshop was a dynamic and engaging session designed to empower students, staff and faculty with effective time management strategies. The workshop commenced with an insightful exploration of the importance of time management in academic and personal success. Participants were guided through interactive activities, discussions, and practical exercises aimed at identifying their personal time management challenges. Mika provided various tools and techniques to help students prioritize tasks, set realistic goals, and create a structured schedule. One step at the time, the Pomodoro Technique, and goal-setting frameworks were among the methodologies covered. The workshop also delved into the significance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance, emphasizing the need for breaks, relaxation, and self-care in order to enhance overall productivity and well-being. Attendees were encouraged to reflect on their own habits and develop personalized strategies to optimize their time based on their unique preferences and lifestyle. By the end of the "Optimize Your Time" workshop, students, faculty and staff gained practical insights into effective time management, honed their organizational skills, and left equipped with a personalized toolkit to enhance their productivity and achieve a more balanced and fulfilling academic and personal life

La presentacion de Preparacion Universitaria para estudiantes de ESL de ayer fue una sesion integral disenada para preparar a estos estudiantes para el exito en la educacion superior. La sesion, facilitada en colaboracion con el departamento de Educacion para Adultos, abordo aspectos cruciales de la integracion academica y social en el entorno universitario. Se compartieron conocimientos valiosos para guiar a los estudiantes de ESL en la navegacion de las complejidades de la vida universitaria, haciendo hincapie en la importancia de una transicion sin problemas. La presentacion tuvo como objetivo empoderar a los estudiantes proporcionando informacion esencial y fomentando un ambiente de apoyo. Con discusiones estimulantes y un enfoque en la colaboracion, el evento tuvo como objetivo equipar a los estudiantes de ESL para trayectorias academicas dinamicas y gratificantes. Yesterday's College Readiness Presentation for ESL students was a comprehensive session geared towards preparing these students for success in higher education. The session, facilitated collaboratively with the Adult Education department, delved into crucial aspects of academic and social integration into the college environment. FSA ID Workshop
During the FSA ID Workshop, students learned about the significance of the FSA ID in the federal student aid process. They received step-by-step guidance on creating and verifying their FSA ID, along with tips for maintaining security. SENMC Peer Mentoring Program Completes First Semester
As part of First Year Experience (FYE), the SENMC Peer Mentors provide assistance and mentorship to students wanting help navigating student life. The program was developed in fall of 2022, under the leadership of Raymond Dominguez. The Fall 2023 semester, the Peer Mentoring program's first semester with cohorts, was a great success with more than 100 students participating. The mentoring program is open to all students at SENMC and is a great way to gain knowledge of campus resources and increase academic success. In addition to mentoring responsibilities, the Peer Mentors assist with HSI Grant Services events and workshops throughout the semesters.

Last Mind CTRL Mental Health Awareness Session
HSI Grant Services hosted a special event in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month! For the final Mind CTRL Session, SENMC teamed up with the fabulous Tiki Tops Coffee Shop and provided healthy smoothies to students. The event was held on May 4th, 2023 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM in Room 153.
